Overview
Promoting Workplace Safety Across New Hampshire
The Safety Division of the New Hampshire Department of Labor is the state authority dedicated to ensuring safe and healthy working environments for public sector employees. Located in the Spaulding Building within the Hugh Gallen State Office Park, this division enforces state safety regulations and promotes best practices to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses . By working collaboratively with employers and employees, the division strives to reduce occupational hazards and foster a culture of safety throughout the Granite State.
Inspections and Compliance
The division’s primary mandate includes the enforcement of RSA 277, which governs safety and health in the workplace. Safety inspectors conduct routine and complaint-based inspections of public sector worksites, such as schools, municipal buildings, and state agencies, to identify potential hazards. They review compliance with safety codes, check for proper protective equipment, and ensure that Joint Loss Management Committees (safety committees) are active and effective in workplaces with 15 or more employees . The division also oversees the filing of the annual Safety Summary Form, which employers must submit to document their safety programs.
Training and Education
Beyond enforcement, the Safety Division places a strong emphasis on education. It offers a variety of safety training programs and seminars designed to help employers understand their legal obligations and implement effective safety measures. Topics range from ergonomic assessments to hazardous material handling. The division provides resources and guidance to help businesses develop written safety programs that meet state standards, thereby reducing workers’ compensation costs and improving employee well-being . Visitors to the Concord office can obtain compliance materials and speak with safety consultants regarding specific workplace concerns.
