Overview
Jersey City Police Impound
Facility Overview
The Jersey City Police Impound, often referred to as the Car Pound, is the designated facility where vehicles are stored after being towed by the Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) for statutory violations. These include parking infractions, unregistered vehicles, abandonment, or involvement in criminal investigations. This facility ensures the secure custody of vehicles until they are reclaimed by their owners or processed for auction.
Vehicle Release Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License: The person driving the vehicle off the lot must have a current license.
- Proof of Ownership: A valid vehicle registration or title is mandatory.
- Proof of Insurance: An active insurance card must be presented.
- Authorization: If the registered owner cannot be present, a notarized letter of authorization is required for a designated agent to retrieve the vehicle.
Fees and Payment
Retrieving a vehicle involves paying both a towing fee and daily storage charges, which accrue for every day the vehicle remains at the lot. It is critical to act quickly to minimize these costs. The facility strictly accepts secure forms of payment only; personal checks are generally not accepted. Unclaimed vehicles may eventually be subject to public auction.
