Overview
Essex County Prosecutor’s Office
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office (ECPO), headquartered in the Veterans Courthouse at 50 West Market Street, is the largest and busiest county prosecutor’s office in the State of New Jersey. This constitutionally established agency is responsible for the detection, investigation, and prosecution of criminal offenses throughout Essex County, which includes Newark. Under the leadership of the County Prosecutor, a team of Assistant Prosecutors, detectives, and support staff work tirelessly to seek justice for victims and ensure the safety of the community. The ECPO handles approximately one-quarter of all criminal prosecutions in the state, dealing with serious crimes ranging from homicide and carjacking to financial fraud and domestic violence. The office acts as the chief law enforcement agency for the county, providing legal guidance and oversight to local police departments. ⚖️
Specialized Units and Investigations
To effectively manage its vast caseload, the Prosecutor’s Office is organized into specialized units that focus on specific types of crimes. The Homicide Task Force is perhaps the most visible, working closely with the Newark Police Department and other agencies to solve violent crimes. The Special Victims Unit (SVU) handles sensitive cases involving sexual assault and child abuse, providing a victim-centered approach to justice. Other key divisions include the Cyber Crimes Unit, which investigates internet-based offenses, and the Corruption Unit, which targets public misconduct. The office also maintains a vigorous Domestic Violence Unit to protect vulnerable family members and partners. Through its Operation Ceasefire and other community outreach programs, the ECPO actively works to reduce gun violence and engage with residents to build trust. 👮♂️
