Profile
Providing Access to Justice for Maine Residents
The Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic is a unique legal aid provider and a defining program of the University of Maine School of Law. Established in 1970, the Clinic has spent over 50 years bridging the gap between legal education and community service. It functions as a teaching law firm where specially licensed student attorneys represent low-income individuals under the close supervision of experienced faculty members. This model ensures that clients receive high-quality legal representation while training the next generation of lawyers in advocacy, ethics, and professional responsibility. ⚖️
Mission and Impact
The Clinic’s mission is two-fold: to educate law students through hands-on practice and to provide free legal services to those who cannot afford an attorney. Annually, the Clinic assists over 600 clients in Southern Maine, handling cases that range from family disputes to complex immigration matters. By prioritizing indigent clients, the Clinic plays a crucial role in the state’s safety net, ensuring that economic status does not determine one’s access to justice.
Practice Areas
Student attorneys at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic handle a diverse caseload through several specialized divisions:
- General Practice: Representation in family law matters such as divorce, parental rights, and child protection, as well as consumer disputes and minor criminal cases.
- Refugee and Human Rights: 🌍 Assisting immigrants and asylum seekers with complex cases involving deportation defense, status adjustment, and protection from persecution.
- Juvenile Justice: Advocating for youth involved in the legal system, focusing on rehabilitation and fair treatment within criminal and school disciplinary proceedings.
- Prisoner Assistance: Providing civil legal assistance to incarcerated individuals, addressing issues related to their confinement and re-entry.
- Protection From Abuse: assisting victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in obtaining court protection orders to ensure their safety.
A Center for Legal Education
Located at the University of Maine School of Law’s new building on Fore Street, the Clinic allows students to take full responsibility for their cases. They interview clients, draft motions, negotiate settlements, and argue in court. This rigorous training ensures that they graduate as practice-ready attorneys, deeply committed to public service and the rule of law. 🎓
