Maine’s Beacon of Hope for Immigrants and Their Families
For thousands of people who have come to Maine seeking safety, stability, and a new beginning, the U.S. immigration system presents a formidable and often frightening challenge. This is where the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) steps in. As Maine’s only statewide non-profit organization dedicated to providing free and low-cost immigration legal services, ILAP is a vital resource for some of our community’s most vulnerable members. 🤝 Founded in 1993, our mission is to help low-income immigrants improve their legal status and to be a leading voice in the fight for more just and humane laws and policies. We believe that everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of their country of origin or ability to pay. Our dedicated team of attorneys and staff in Portland, Maine, works tirelessly to provide expert legal counsel, advocacy, and hope to immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees across the state. We are more than a legal service; we are a partner and an advocate on the long journey toward security and belonging. ❤️
Comprehensive Immigration Legal Services
ILAP provides expert legal assistance across a wide spectrum of complex immigration matters. Our experienced team understands the nuances of immigration law and is committed to finding the best possible legal pathways for our clients. We recognize that each case is unique, representing an individual’s life story and their hopes for the future. Our services are designed to address the diverse needs of Maine’s immigrant communities, from those fleeing persecution to those seeking to reunite with family.
- Citizenship Lawyers: We guide lawful permanent residents through the entire naturalization process, from application preparation to interview coaching, helping them achieve their dream of becoming U.S. citizens.
- Family Immigration Lawyers: We assist U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents in petitioning for their eligible family members to immigrate to the United States, working to reunite families separated by borders.
- Asylum and Refugee Support: A core part of our work involves representing individuals fleeing persecution and violence in their home countries. We help asylum seekers navigate the complex and demanding process of applying for protection in the U.S.
- Deportation Defense Lawyers: We provide critical legal representation for individuals facing removal proceedings in immigration court, fighting to protect their rights and keep families together.
- Humanitarian Relief: We have special programs to assist survivors of domestic violence (VAWA), human trafficking (T-Visas), and other violent crimes (U-Visas), as well as abandoned or neglected children (Special Immigrant Juvenile Status).
A Statewide Mission with a Community Focus
As Maine’s only statewide organization of its kind, ILAP’s impact is felt in every corner of the state. While our main office is in Portland, we extend our services through community outreach and remote assistance to ensure that immigrants living in rural and underserved areas also have access to high-quality legal help. 🗺️ We achieve this through direct legal representation, community education, and systemic advocacy. Our ‘HelpLine’ provides free and confidential legal information to hundreds of people each month. We also collaborate with a network of pro bono attorneys and community partners to expand our reach and impact. Our advocacy work aims to create systemic change, fighting for fair immigration policies at the local, state, and national levels. We are proud to be a trusted, community-based organization that stands in solidarity with Maine’s immigrant population.
