Profile
Championing Free Enterprise and Economic Liberties in the Courtroom
Since 1977, the New England Legal Foundation (NELF) has served as the region’s premier non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to defending and advancing the principles of free enterprise. 🏛️ From our headquarters in Boston, we are a powerful voice for economic freedom, individual property rights, and properly limited government. NELF’s mission is to challenge actions by government and private litigants that unreasonably intrude upon the economic freedoms of individuals and businesses. We do this by participating in precedent-setting cases, often representing small businesses or individuals who have exhausted their resources fighting unfair governmental action. We are a 501(c)(3) organization that provides our legal services without charge, supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations who share our commitment to a vibrant and inclusive economy.
A Strategic Focus on Precedent-Setting Litigation
NELF’s legal work is focused on cases that have the potential to shape policy and protect the foundations of a free market. We are not a general practice firm; we are strategic litigators with a national reputation for excellence in appellate advocacy. Our attorneys engage in the most significant economic issues facing the region and the nation. ⚖️
- Business Litigation Lawyers: This is the core of our work. We litigate and file influential amicus curiae (‘friend of the court’) briefs in cases involving significant business and economic issues. We focus on matters of government overreach, burdensome regulation, and challenges to the free market.
- Employment and Labor Law: We actively participate in cases that define the relationship between employers and employees, such as clarifying the scope of non-competition agreements and challenging federal overreach in employment contracts.
- Property Rights and Government Regulation: We defend traditional property rights against unwarranted government intrusion, including cases involving land use and environmental regulations.
- Taxation and Economic Policy: NELF engages in legal challenges related to taxation and other economic policies that impact the business community and individual economic liberty.
The Equalizer Institute: Supporting Underserved Entrepreneurs
As part of our mission, NELF runs the Equalizer Institute, a free legal clinic for entrepreneurs in underrepresented populations. 🤝 This initiative provides vital legal advice to small businesses run by women, people from BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, veterans, and new Americans, advising on areas such as real estate, permitting, workforce development, and intellectual property, thereby fostering inclusive economic growth.
Advancing Free Enterprise for a Better Future
For nearly 50 years, NELF has been a steadfast advocate for the principles that drive economic prosperity and opportunity. 🌟 We believe that the free market, when protected from unwarranted intrusion, provides the greatest good for the greatest number. Through our strategic litigation and advocacy, we work to ensure that New England remains a place where businesses can thrive, innovate, and create opportunities for all.
