Free Civil Legal Help for Those in Need
Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands is a non-profit law firm dedicated to the principle that no one should be denied justice due to an inability to pay. As Tennessee’s largest non-profit law firm, we provide free civil legal assistance and community education to low-income people, the elderly, and victims of domestic violence. We do not handle criminal cases; instead, we focus on the essential civil legal problems that affect families’ health, safety, and livelihoods. Our mission is to advance, defend, and enforce the legal rights of vulnerable populations to secure the necessities of life.
Areas of Assistance
We focus our resources on cases where legal help can make the biggest difference in preserving a family’s stability. Our primary practice areas include:
- Family and Domestic Violence: We help survivors of domestic abuse obtain Orders of Protection and navigate divorce and custody proceedings to ensure their safety.
- Housing and Eviction: We represent tenants facing eviction, foreclosure, or unsafe living conditions, fighting to keep people in their homes.
- Consumer and Finance: We assist with bankruptcy, debt collection defense, and predatory lending issues to protect financial stability.
- Health and Benefits: We help individuals access necessary healthcare (TennCare) and appeal denials of SNAP, SSI, and unemployment benefits.
- Tax Advocacy: Our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic assists with IRS disputes.
Committed to the Community
Our Nashville office serves as a hub for Davidson County, staffed by dedicated attorneys and volunteers who believe in fairness and equity. We are funded by grants and donations, which allows us to offer our services entirely free of charge to those who qualify. We also conduct community clinics to provide legal advice and education. If you are facing a civil legal crisis and cannot afford an attorney, the Legal Aid Society is here to offer hope, guidance, and skilled representation.
