Profile
Justice for All in Central Texas
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) is one of the nation’s largest and most respected non-profit legal aid providers. For over five decades, TRLA has been a beacon of hope for low-income residents, ensuring that the justice system is accessible to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. The Austin office serves as a critical hub for Travis County and the surrounding areas, offering high-quality legal representation in civil matters. This is not a standard private practice; it is a mission-driven organization dedicated to promoting the dignity, self-sufficiency, safety, and stability of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Comprehensive Civil Legal Services
TRLA provides free legal assistance in dozens of practice areas, focusing on issues that affect the basic needs and rights of their clients. While they do not handle criminal cases, their scope in civil law is vast and impactful.
- Housing and Tenants’ Rights: Austin’s rapid growth has led to a housing crisis for many. TRLA defends tenants facing eviction, fights housing discrimination, and helps secure decent, safe, and affordable housing for families. They are a frontline defense against homelessness.
- Family Law and Domestic Violence: A significant portion of TRLA’s work involves protecting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They assist with protective orders, divorces, and child custody disputes, prioritizing the physical safety of their clients above all else.
- Employment and Farmworker Rights: TRLA has a storied history of advocating for migrant and seasonal farmworkers. They also represent other low-wage workers in cases involving wage theft, unsafe working conditions, and employment discrimination.
- Public Benefits: Navigating government bureaucracy can be impossible without legal help. TRLA assists individuals in obtaining and maintaining essential benefits like SNAP (food stamps), Medicaid, SSI/SSDI, and veterans’ benefits.
Specialized Advocacy Projects
Beyond general civil legal aid, TRLA operates several specialized teams designed to address specific systemic issues. These include the Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) network and the Disaster Assistance team, which helps families recover title to their homes and access FEMA funds after natural disasters. They also have a dedicated team for Foster Youth, ensuring that children in the state’s care have a voice and legal protection.
Eligibility and Cost
As a legal aid organization, TRLA’s services are entirely free for eligible clients. Eligibility is generally based on income and asset guidelines, typically serving those at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. However, certain grants may allow them to serve other specific populations, such as victims of crime or veterans, regardless of income. Because demand for services often exceeds resources, TRLA focuses on cases where their intervention will have the greatest impact.
Contact Information
If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer and are facing a critical civil legal problem, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid may be able to help. You can apply for services by phone or during their intake hours. While you cannot simply order a lawyer like a service, TRLA assesses every application to determine if they can provide representation or advice. They are the place to turn when you urgently need a lawyer to keep a roof over your head or protect your family from violence.
