Overview
Waste and Recycling Services
The Bridgeport Public Facilities – Transfer Station serves as the primary drop-off location for residential solid waste and recycling in the City of Bridgeport. Operated by the Department of Public Facilities, this site allows homeowners and tenants to dispose of household trash, bulky items, and yard waste that may not be suitable for regular curbside pickup. The facility plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and sustainability goals by offering a controlled environment for waste management.
Accepted Materials
Residents can bring a variety of items to the Transfer Station for disposal. Accepted materials include:
- Household Trash: General refuse and municipal solid waste.
- Recyclables: Paper, cardboard, glass, and plastics (must be separated).
- Yard Waste: Leaves (in brown paper bags only), brush (tied in bundles), and lawn clippings.
- Bulk Items: Furniture, mattresses (must be cut in half), and appliances (white goods).
- Tires: Limited to two tires per trip.
Prohibited Items
To ensure safety and environmental compliance, certain materials are strictly prohibited. These include hazardous waste, medical waste, toxic liquids, paint, and large-scale construction debris such as sheetrock, roofing shingles, and concrete. Residents looking to dispose of hazardous materials must wait for designated collection events or use alternative licensed facilities.
Resident Access Policy
The Transfer Station is open exclusively to Bridgeport residents. Commercial vehicles and non-residents are not permitted. Upon arrival, visitors must present valid proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or vehicle registration matching a Bridgeport address. Property owners who live outside the city must provide proof of ownership. All loads must be covered and secured during transport to prevent littering.
