Overview
Bridgeport American Job Center (Comprehensive)
The Bridgeport American Job Center is a full-service workforce development facility operated in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL) and The WorkPlace. Located in downtown Bridgeport at 2 Lafayette Square, this center serves as a vital ”one-stop” resource for job seekers, students, and businesses in Fairfield County. The facility provides a comprehensive array of employment and training services designed to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity. Unlike smaller affiliate sites, this comprehensive center offers extensive on-site resources, including specialized assistance for veterans, youth, and individuals with disabilities.
Core Employment Services
The center offers free services to the public, funded through state and federal programs such as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).
Key services include:
- Job Search Assistance: Access to the CTHires online job bank, computerized job matching, and labor market information.
- Career Counseling: Professional guidance on resume writing, interview preparation, and career planning workshops.
- Training Grants: Eligibility determination for federally funded job training programs in high-demand industries (e.g., healthcare, manufacturing).
- Veterans’ Services: Dedicated Local Veterans’ Employment Representatives (LVERs) and Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program (DVOP) specialists assist eligible veterans with transitioning to civilian careers.
Unemployment Assistance
While the center provides computers and phones for filing unemployment claims, it is important to note that direct staff assistance with Unemployment Insurance (UI) issues typically requires an appointment. The primary method for resolving UI issues is through the online ReEmployCT system or the Consumer Contact Center, though this location does host UI staff for specific scheduled interactions.
Location and Access
The center is situated at 2 Lafayette Square, near the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard. It is easily accessible via public transportation, located just a short walk from the Bridgeport Transportation Center (train and bus hub).
Visitor Guidelines:
- Parking: On-site parking is not free. Visitors generally use the paid parking garage on Fairfield Avenue (across the street) or find metered street parking nearby.
- Appointments: While walk-ins are accepted for basic resource room usage, appointments are strongly recommended for one-on-one counseling and are mandatory for most unemployment benefit inquiries to ensure staff availability.
