Overview
General Overview
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) office in Bridgeport operates within the Brien McMahon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse at 915 Lafayette Boulevard. Serving the District of Connecticut, this office is part of the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. The Marshals are the enforcement arm of the federal courts, tasked with ensuring the effective operation of the judicial system and the integrity of the Constitution. Their presence in Bridgeport is critical for securing the federal courthouse, protecting federal judges, witnesses, and court officers, and managing the transport and custody of federal prisoners.
Core Missions
The Bridgeport office executes several key federal mandates:
- Judicial Security: Providing a secure environment for federal court proceedings and protecting judicial personnel from threats.
- Fugitive Investigations: Leading the Connecticut Violent Fugitive Task Force, which partners with local and state police to apprehend dangerous fugitives with outstanding warrants.
- Asset Forfeiture: Managing and disposing of assets seized from criminal enterprises.
- Prisoner Operations: Coordinating the housing and transportation of federal detainees (JPATS) to and from court appearances.
Building Access and Security
The USMS office is located in a high-security federal facility. Access is strictly controlled. All visitors to the Brien McMahon Federal Building must pass through airport-style security screening conducted by Court Security Officers (CSOs) contracted by the Marshals. Electronic devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and laptops, are generally prohibited for the general public and must be left outside the courthouse or in a vehicle. There are no storage lockers available for the public’s electronics. Valid government-issued photo identification is required for entry.
Public Contact
The Marshals Service generally does not provide walk-in services for the general public (such as background checks or police reports). Visits are typically limited to official business, attorney visits with detainees, or individuals surrendering on a warrant. If you need to report a tip regarding a federal fugitive, it is recommended to use the USMS Tips app or contact the office by phone rather than appearing in person.
