Overview
Office of the Chief Public Defender: Fairfield Judicial District
The Public Defender's Office for the Fairfield Judicial District is located within the historic Fairfield County Courthouse at 1061 Main Street. This office is part of the first statewide public defender system established in the United States. Its primary mission is to provide high-quality legal representation to indigent defendants—those who cannot afford to hire a private attorney—in criminal matters. The attorneys and social workers here handle the most serious cases in the region, including felonies, capital offenses, and complex litigation transferred from lower geographical area courts.
Legal Services and Eligibility
Representation by the Public Defender is not automatic; it is based on financial need. Individuals facing criminal charges must apply for services and demonstrate that they meet the income guidelines set by the state. Once appointed, the office provides a defense team that may include investigators and social workers to ensure a comprehensive defense. The office handles a wide range of proceedings, from arraignments and bond hearings to trials and sentencing. They also represent clients in habeas corpus matters and violation of probation hearings within the Judicial District.
Courthouse Security and Access
Because the office is situated inside the Superior Court building, all visitors are subject to strict judicial security protocols. Upon entering the courthouse, individuals must pass through metal detectors and submit personal items for x-ray inspection. Cell phones may be restricted or must be silenced depending on current court rules. Visitors are expected to dress in business attire or modest clothing appropriate for a court setting. It is advisable to arrive early to clear security before any scheduled appointments or court appearances.
Location and Transit
The courthouse is a prominent landmark in downtown Bridgeport, located at the intersection of Main Street and Fairfield Avenue. It is exceptionally well-served by public transportation. The Bridgeport Transportation Center, which serves Metro-North, Amtrak, and GBT buses, is just a few blocks away. Numerous Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) bus routes stop directly in front of or near the courthouse. For those driving, parking can be challenging; there is no public parking lot at the courthouse itself, so visitors must use nearby metered street parking or paid private garages.
