Overview
Building Bridges with the Community
The Community Services Division of the Bridgeport Police Department serves as the vital link between law enforcement and the city’s residents. Located at 1395 Sylvan Avenue in the city’s North End, this division is dedicated to fostering positive relationships, promoting public safety through education, and addressing quality-of-life issues that affect neighborhoods. Unlike the main patrol division which responds to 911 calls, Community Services focuses on proactive engagement and prevention. The officers stationed here manage a variety of outreach initiatives designed to build trust and collaboration, including the Neighborhood Block Watch and Citizen Patrol programs. They work closely with community leaders, schools, and senior centers to deliver safety presentations and listen to local concerns.
Youth and Safety Programs
A primary mission of this division is investing in the city’s youth to prevent future crime. The office coordinates the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, placing officers in schools to ensure a safe learning environment and mentor students. They also administer the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) curriculum, teaching children about the dangers of substance abuse and bullying. Additionally, the Crisis Intervention Team for Youth (CIT-Y) operates under this umbrella, providing specialized support for young people facing mental health challenges. For homeowners and business owners, the division offers free security surveys—by appointment—where an officer inspects a property and recommends improvements to deter burglary and theft.
Access and Operations
The Sylvan Avenue facility is distinct from the main Police Headquarters on Congress Street. While it is a police building, its atmosphere is geared more towards public interaction and administrative support for community groups. Visitors generally come here for scheduled meetings, training sessions for block watches, or to pick up informational materials. Standard security protocols are in effect; visitors may be asked to present identification and are prohibited from bringing weapons into the facility. The division operates during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, and is closed on weekends and holidays. Residents wishing to start a block watch or request a safety presentation should contact this office directly rather than calling the main non-emergency line.
- Block Watch: Training and organizing residents to observe and report suspicious activity.
- School Resource Officers: Police presence in schools for safety and mentorship.
- Safety Presentations: Educational talks on fraud, drug awareness, and personal safety.
- Security Surveys: Professional assessments of home and business security vulnerabilities.
