Overview
About the Bridgeport Tax Collector
The Bridgeport Tax Collector’s Office is the municipal agency dedicated to the billing and collection of all tax revenue due to the City of Bridgeport. 🏛️ Located in the City Hall Annex on Lyon Terrace, this office manages accounts for Real Estate, Personal Property (business equipment), and Motor Vehicle taxes. 📉 The funds collected here are essential for supporting city services, schools, and infrastructure. It is important to note that the Tax Collector does not determine the value of your property; that is the function of the Tax Assessor. This office solely issues bills based on those assessments and collects payments.
DMV Clearance and Payments
A primary reason residents visit this office is to resolve issues preventing vehicle registration. 🚗 Key policies include:
- DMV Clearance: If you have delinquent motor vehicle taxes, you cannot register your car. ⚠️ Immediate clearance is only available if you pay in person with cash, money order, or cashier’s check.
- Online Payments: If you pay delinquent taxes online or with a personal check, you must wait 5 to 10 business days for the payment to clear before the DMV hold is released.
- Bank Payments: During the peak tax months of July and January, current (non-delinquent) tax bills can be paid at participating M&T Bank branches in the Fairfield County area.
Security and Visit Information
The Tax Collector is located within a secure government building. 👮♂️ Visitors must enter through the main lobby and pass through security screening, including metal detectors. Valid photo identification is required. 📵 Lines can be long, especially during July and January; bringing all necessary bill stubs and payment methods ready is highly recommended. Weapons and sharp objects are strictly prohibited on the premises.
