Connecticut Commission of Pharmacy
Regulating Pharmacy Practice and Safety
The Connecticut Commission of Pharmacy (also known as the State Board of Pharmacy) is the state regulatory body responsible for overseeing the practice of pharmacy in Connecticut. Operating under the umbrella of the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), the Commission is headquartered at 450 Columbus Boulevard in Hartford. The Commission is composed of seven members appointed by the Governor, including licensed pharmacists and public members. Its primary mission is to protect the public health and safety by ensuring that all pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy facilities adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct and legal compliance. The Commission holds the authority to issue, renew, suspend, and revoke licenses for pharmacy professionals and retail or hospital pharmacies. They play a critical role in monitoring the distribution of prescription drugs, enforcing controlled substance laws, and investigating complaints regarding medication errors, diversion, or unethical practices.
Licensing and Enforcement Services
The Commission provides a range of essential administrative and regulatory services.
- Licensing: The Commission processes applications and renewals for Pharmacists, Pharmacy Interns, and Pharmacy Technicians. They also license various types of facilities, including community pharmacies, nuclear pharmacies, and long-term care pharmacies.
- Inspections: Drug Control Agents conduct regular inspections of licensed facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal laws regarding drug storage, security, and record-keeping.
- Disciplinary Hearings: The Commission conducts hearings to adjudicate cases involving violations of the Pharmacy Practice Act. These meetings are typically held monthly and are open to the public.
- Prescription Monitoring: The Commission works closely with the DCP’s Prescription Monitoring Program (CPMRS) to prevent the misuse and abuse of controlled prescription medications.
Office Information and Meetings
The administrative offices are located in the State Office Building at 450 Columbus Boulevard. While most licensing tasks, such as renewals and address changes, can be completed online through the eLicense portal, the office handles complex inquiries and formal hearings. Commission meetings are held in the building’s meeting rooms and provide a forum for discussing regulatory changes and reviewing disciplinary agreements. Visitors attending a meeting or visiting the DCP office must pass through security in the lobby.
