Overview
Hartford Public Library – Downtown
The Hartford Public Library (HPL) Downtown Branch, located at 500 Main Street, acts as a vital civic and cultural center for the city. Spanning over the Whitehead Highway, this flagship location offers far more than just book lending. It houses The American Place, a dedicated center helping immigrants and refugees adjust to life in Hartford through citizenship classes and English language learning. The library is also a designated Passport Acceptance Facility, where U.S. citizens can apply for passports by appointment.
- Municipal ID: The library issues the ‘Hartford City ID’, a government-recognized identification card available to all residents regardless of immigration status, which connects them to local services.
- Technology: Visitors have access to a large computer lab, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and 3D printing services in the digital media lab.
- History Center: The Hartford History Center on the 3rd floor preserves the city’s municipal archives, spanning three centuries of documents, maps, and photographs.
Policies and Access
HPL is a fine-free institution for overdue books, removing barriers to access for the community. However, fees still apply for lost or damaged items. Security guards monitor the entrance, and bags may be subject to inspection. The building is fully ADA accessible, featuring elevators and ramps. Located directly next to City Hall, it is a primary stop for numerous CTtransit bus lines. Patrons can pay for printing and other small fees using cash or coin at automated kiosks, while passport fees typically require a check or money order for the Department of State portion.
