Overview
Hartford Waste and Recycling Center
The Hartford Waste and Recycling Center, operated by the Department of Public Works, is the city’s primary facility for the disposal of residential waste that cannot be collected curbside. Located at 180 Leibert Road, this transfer station allows Hartford residents to responsibly dispose of bulky items, recyclables, and yard waste. While the historic landfill at this site is no longer in active use for trash burial, the facility remains a critical hub for the city’s sanitation and sustainability efforts.
Resident Services and Access
Access to the center is strictly limited to City of Hartford residents. Commercial vehicles and non-residents are prohibited. The facility accepts a variety of materials under specific guidelines:
- Bulky Waste: Residents may drop off large items such as furniture and mattresses. A permit is required for most visits involving bulky items.
- Yard Waste: The center accepts brush (tied in bundles) and leaves (in biodegradable paper bags) year-round, supplementing the seasonal curbside collection.
- Electronics Recycling: Designated drop-off areas are available for e-waste, including computers and televisions, ensuring toxic materials are kept out of the environment.
- Permits: To use the facility for large loads, residents often need to obtain a bulky waste permit from the Department of Public Works office.
Important Rules
Visitors must adhere to safety and operational protocols. Residents are responsible for unloading their own vehicles; staff are present to direct traffic but cannot assist with lifting. Proof of residency (such as a driver’s license or utility bill) is required upon entry. By utilizing this facility, residents help maintain the cleanliness of Hartford’s neighborhoods and streets.
