Overview
Office of the U.S. Magistrate Judges
Federal Judicial Officers
The United States Magistrate Judges in Hartford operate out of the Abraham A. Ribicoff Federal Building and United States Courthouse at 450 Main Street. These federal judicial officers play an essential role in the administration of justice within the District of Connecticut. Magistrate Judges assist District Judges by handling a variety of pretrial matters in both civil and criminal cases. They are often the first judicial officer a defendant sees, presiding over initial appearances, arraignments, and bond hearings. In civil matters, they conduct settlement conferences and, with the consent of all parties, have the authority to preside over jury and non-jury trials and enter final judgments.
- Criminal Proceedings: Issue warrants, set bail, and hold preliminary hearings.
- Dispute Resolution: Mediate settlement conferences to resolve complex civil litigation.
- Civil Consent: Full authority to try civil cases when parties consent.
