Overview
Office of the Adjutant General
Headquarters of the Connecticut Military Department
The Office of the Adjutant General is located within the historic William A. O’Neill Armory at 360 Broad Street in Hartford. This facility serves as the administrative and operational headquarters for the Connecticut Military Department. The Adjutant General holds the rank of Major General and acts as the commander of the state’s military forces, which include the Connecticut Army National Guard, the Connecticut Air National Guard, and the organized militia. The primary mission of this department is to maintain properly trained and equipped military units available for federal mobilization during war or national emergencies, and to provide assistance to the state during domestic disasters and civil disturbances.
The William A. O’Neill Armory
The headquarters is housed in a massive granite structure built in 1909, originally known as the State Arsenal and Armory. It is a significant landmark in Hartford, occupying a large footprint near the State Capitol. The building functions as a nerve center for military logic, strategic planning, and veteran support services.
- Emergency Management: The department coordinates closely with state emergency services to deploy the National Guard for storm response, flood control, and other humanitarian missions.
- Military Records: The facility houses the archives for service records of Connecticut veterans, assisting them in obtaining benefits and proving service history.
- Recruitment and Retention: Strategic oversight of recruitment efforts to maintain the force levels required for operational readiness.
Security and Access
As an active military installation and government headquarters, the Armory maintains strict security protocols. Public access is generally restricted to official business, scheduled events, or specific veteran services. Visitors must have valid identification and a confirmed purpose for their visit. The building occasionally hosts large-scale public events, such as the governor’s inaugural ball or veteran job fairs, during which security measures are adjusted accordingly.
