Overview
DCP Food and Standards Division
Consumer Protection and Safety
The Food and Standards Division is a specialized branch of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). Based at 450 Columbus Boulevard, this division plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and ensuring economic fairness in the marketplace. It is responsible for regulating the manufacture and sale of food products within the state (excluding farms, which are regulated by the Dept. of Agriculture). Additionally, the division enforces ‘Weights and Measures’ laws, ensuring that consumers receive the correct amount of product when purchasing fuel, groceries, or other measured goods.
Core Responsibilities
- Food Safety Inspections: routine sanitary inspections of bakeries, food processing plants, and non-alcoholic beverage manufacturers.
- Weights and Measures: Testing and sealing commercial scales, gas station pumps, and home heating oil truck meters to ensure accuracy.
- Product Labeling: Enforcing state and federal laws regarding the proper labeling and packaging of food products.
- Gasoline Quality: Monitoring the quality and octane rating of motor fuels sold at service stations across Connecticut.
Industry Regulation
This division licenses various businesses, including weighmasters, dealers of weighing devices, and frozen dessert manufacturers. They also handle consumer complaints regarding short-weight packages, gas pump accuracy, and food adulteration. Visitors to the office are typically industry professionals seeking licensing guidance or attending hearings. General consumers with complaints are encouraged to file them online or via phone before visiting in person. The building requires security clearance for entry.
