Regional Planning Organization
- Mission: The official regional planning organization for the 7-county northeastern Illinois region.
- Strategy: Implements the ‘ON TO 2050’ comprehensive plan to address transportation, environment, and economic development.
- Governance: Created by state statute in 2005, merging previous planning commissions to integrate land use and transport.
CMAP serves as a forum for the region’s governments and communities to solve common problems. It distributes federal transportation funding and provides data and technical assistance. The office is located in the historic Old Post Office building, a hub of modern business and civic activity.
Public Engagement
- Committees: Hosts public meetings for the MPO Policy Committee and CMAP Board to guide regional decisions.
- Data: Provides the ‘Data Hub’ for free access to regional census, land use, and transportation data.
- Access: Visitors must check in at the lobby security desk; appointments are recommended for staff meetings.
