City Financial Services and Vehicle Registration
Bureau Overview
The Augusta Bureau of Treasury and Tax Collection is the financial hub for the City of Augusta, located on the first floor of City Hall (Augusta City Center) at 16 Cony Street. This bureau is responsible for the collection of all municipal revenues, including real estate and personal property taxes. However, for most residents, it serves as the primary destination for motor vehicle-related services. Acting as a municipal agent for the state, the bureau allows residents to complete vehicle registrations, obtain license plates, and pay excise taxes in one convenient location, saving them a trip to the state DMV branch.
Vehicle and Licensing Services
The Tax Collector’s office handles a high volume of transactions daily. Key services include:
- Motor Vehicle Registration: Processing new registrations and renewals for cars, trucks, trailers, and motorcycles. The office issues stickers and plates directly.
- Recreational Vehicle Registration: Residents can register boats, snowmobiles, and ATVs.
- Excise Tax Collection: This is the municipal portion of the vehicle registration fee, which stays local to fund city road maintenance.
- Dog Licensing: In coordination with the City Clerk, the Treasury window accepts payments for annual dog licenses.
Payment and Visiting Information
The bureau accepts various forms of payment, including cash and checks. Credit and debit cards are accepted but are subject to a 2.5% convenience fee. Residents can also make tax payments online through the city’s portal, though vehicle registrations requiring new plates must be done in person. The office is open Monday through Friday, opening at 7:45 AM to accommodate early visitors. As a secure government facility, visitors to City Hall may be subject to security screening. The building is ADA accessible, with an elevator and handicap parking available in the adjacent lot.
