Overview
Greater Augusta Utility District
The Greater Augusta Utility District (GAUD) is a standalone quasi-municipal entity responsible for managing the water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure for Augusta and surrounding communities. 💧 Chartered by the Maine Legislature in 2007 (with roots dating back to the Augusta Water District of 1903), GAUD ensures the delivery of clean drinking water and the environmentally safe treatment of wastewater. The district operates independently from the city government, governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the City of Augusta and the City of Hallowell.
Services and Operations
The district provides essential services to thousands of residential and commercial customers. Key operations include:
- Drinking Water: Sourcing and treating water from local aquifers to meet strict federal and state safety standards. 🥤
- Wastewater Treatment: collecting and treating sewage from Augusta, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth, and Winthrop at its regional treatment facility to protect the Kennebec River. 🌊
- Stormwater Management: Maintaining catch basins and drainage systems to prevent flooding and pollution runoff.
Customer Service & Payments
Located at 12 Williams Street, the district’s main office handles billing, service connections, and engineering permits. Customers can pay bills via a variety of methods, including a 24/7 secure drop box, online portal (fees may apply), or auto-pay options. 💳 The district also offers assistance for identifying leaks and provides engineering standards for contractors and developers working within the service area. In the event of a water main break or sewer emergency, GAUD maintains crews on call 24/7/365.
