John Charest Public Works Facility
Department Overview and Services
The John Charest Public Works Facility serves as the operational hub for the City of Augusta’s Department of Public Works. Named in honor of long-serving Director John H. Charest, this facility houses the teams responsible for maintaining the city’s essential infrastructure. The department’s mission is to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of Augusta’s public spaces. Key responsibilities include the maintenance of over 300 lane miles of roadways, 125 centerline miles of streets, and 90 miles of sidewalks.
Solid Waste and Recycling
One of the most visible functions of the department is the management of solid waste. The Public Works team oversees:
- Curbside Rubbish Collection: Weekly pickup for residential properties.
- Recycling: Management of the “”Single Sort”” recycling program, with drop-off containers available for residents.
- Hatch Hill Landfill: Operation of the regional solid waste facility (located separately on Hatch Hill Road), which serves Augusta and contracting communities.
- Composting: Residents can bring grass clippings and leaves to the Public Works facility (limit five bags) or Hatch Hill for composting.
Winter Operations and Street Maintenance
During Maine’s harsh winters, the facility coordinates snow plowing and ice control operations to keep the city moving. Year-round, the department handles street sweeping, pothole repairs, storm drainage maintenance, and fleet management through its Central Garage division. The Bureau of Engineering, also part of the department, provides technical support for city projects.
Visitor Information
The facility is open to the public for specific services, such as disposing of yard waste or inquiring about permits.
- Hours: The facility generally operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Payments: Fees for bulky waste or other services can often be paid in person, though online registration is encouraged for certain programs.
- Restrictions: Hazardous waste, universal waste (like TVs or monitors), and liquid wastes are NOT accepted at this location and must be taken to Hatch Hill or handled during special collection events.
