Overview
Prosecutorial District 4
The Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office, located at 95 State Street in Augusta, serves as the primary prosecutorial agency for Kennebec and Somerset Counties (Prosecutorial District 4). Led by the elected District Attorney, this office is responsible for prosecuting all criminal and civil violations that occur within its jurisdiction, ranging from traffic infractions to serious felonies. The office works in close collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, including the Augusta Police Department and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, to review evidence and determine appropriate charges.
Victim and Witness Services
A central component of the DA’s mission is the support of crime victims. The office employs Victim Witness Advocates (VWAs) who guide victims through the often complex criminal justice process. These advocates provide critical services such as:
- Case Updates: Keeping victims informed about court dates, bail conditions, and case outcomes.
- Restitution: Assisting victims in documenting financial losses and seeking reimbursement from offenders.
- Court Accompaniment: Providing emotional support and explanation of proceedings during hearings and trials.
- Safety Planning: Helping victims of domestic violence or harassment obtain protection orders.
Justice Programs
The Kennebec District Attorney’s Office is known for implementing progressive justice initiatives aimed at reducing recidivism. These include the Co-occurring Disorders Court, which addresses the needs of offenders with both mental health and substance use issues, and the Veterans Treatment Court. The office also operates an Alternative Sentencing Program and a Diversion Program for certain non-violent offenders, focusing on rehabilitation and community service as alternatives to traditional incarceration.
Location and Contact
The office is situated near the Kennebec County Courthouse and the Capital Judicial Center. It maintains an open-door policy for victims and defense attorneys, although appointments are recommended. Visitors should be aware that the office is a secure legal facility. Due to recent legislative changes, the DA’s office generally cannot speak directly with accused individuals who do not have legal counsel present, referring them instead to Maine Commission on Indigent Legal Services.
