Overview
Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC)
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, headquartered at Key Plaza (286 Water Street), is the state’s primary public health agency. Operating under the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Maine CDC works to preserve and promote the health of all Maine residents. This facility houses administrative offices and key divisions responsible for disease surveillance, health inspections, and public health planning.
Key Programs and Services
The Maine CDC manages a wide array of critical programs that impact daily life and safety:
- Disease Surveillance: Monitoring and responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases such as influenza, Lyme disease, and COVID-19.
- Health Inspection Program: Licensing and inspecting eating establishments, lodging places, campgrounds, and youth camps to ensure sanitation standards.
- Drinking Water Program: Regulating public water systems to ensure safe drinking water.
- Public Health Nursing: Providing direct health services and testing in communities.
- Vital Records: (Note: While part of CDC, the Data, Research, and Vital Statistics office is often the contact for birth/death certificates).
Visiting Key Plaza
The offices are located in the Key Bank Plaza building in downtown Augusta. As a state government facility, access to the upper floors is restricted. Visitors typically need to check in at the security desk in the lobby. Photo identification is required, and visitors may be subject to security screening. It is highly recommended to have an appointment before visiting, as many services (like health inspection licensing) are handled primarily by phone or online.
