Overview
Maine Department of Corrections
Central Administration and Oversight
The Commissioner’s Office at the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) serves as the executive headquarters for the state’s correctional system. Located on Tyson Drive within the East Campus state office complex, this facility houses the leadership team responsible for the strategic direction, policy formulation, and administrative supervision of all adult and juvenile correctional facilities in Maine. The Commissioner, appointed by the Governor, oversees a vast network that includes the Maine State Prison, Mountain View Correctional Facility, and Long Creek Youth Development Center. The office ensures that the department fulfills its mission to reduce recidivism through evidence-based practices, while maintaining safe and secure environments for both staff and residents.
Key Functions and Divisions
From this central location, the MDOC manages the Adult Community Corrections division, which supervises probation and parole services statewide. The office also coordinates the Juvenile Services division, focusing on rehabilitation and diversion programs for youth. Administrative functions such as victim services, data analytics, and budget management are centralized here. The Commissioner’s team works closely with the legislature, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to implement criminal justice reforms and improve reentry outcomes for justice-involved individuals. While this office is primarily administrative and does not house inmates, it is the primary point of contact for departmental inquiries, media relations, and policy governance.
