Overview
Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office
Mission and Overview
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, established in 1799, is one of the oldest and most respected law enforcement agencies in Maine. Located at 73 Winthrop Street, this office serves as the administrative and operational headquarters for the Sheriff’s law enforcement division. The agency is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Kennebec County through professional, fair, and effective policing. The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for law enforcement in rural areas without their own police departments, as well as providing county-wide support services.
Divisions and Services
The Sheriff’s Office operates several specialized divisions from this location:
- Patrol Division: Deputies patrol nearly 900 square miles of the county, responding to calls for service, enforcing traffic laws, and investigating crimes.
- Criminal Investigation Division (CID): Detectives handle serious crimes such as homicides, major drug offenses, and sexual assaults.
- Civil Process: The Civil Division is responsible for serving legal documents (subpoenas, summonses, writs) throughout the county. This is a fee-based service used by attorneys and private citizens.
- Records: The office maintains police reports and accident records, which can be requested by the public or insurance companies.
Connection to Correctional Facility
While the administrative and patrol offices are at 73 Winthrop Street, the Kennebec County Correctional Facility (Jail) is located nearby at 115 State Street. The Sheriff oversees both facilities. Visitors looking to deposit bail, visit inmates, or drop off funds should typically go to the Correctional Facility address, while those needing police reports, civil service, or administrative assistance should visit the Winthrop Street office.
Office Hours and Contact
The administrative lobby at Winthrop Street is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Residents can visit during these hours to request records, register sex offenders, or file complaints. For emergencies, always dial 911.
