Overview
Preserving Maine’s History
The Maine State Archives is the official repository for the permanent records of the Maine state government. Located within the Cultural Building complex directly adjacent to the Maine State House, the Archives share space with the Maine State Library and the Maine State Museum. The agency is tasked with preserving millions of documents that tell the story of the state, from its separation from Massachusetts in 1820 to the present day. This institution is a goldmine for historians, genealogists, and legal researchers, housing everything from original legislative acts and court records to Civil War enlistment papers and vintage maps.
Renovation and Service Status
Please be aware that the Maine Cultural Building has been undergoing a major, multi-year renovation project to modernize its mechanical systems and facilities. Access to the physical building may be restricted, and services are frequently shifting between temporary locations and digital-only fulfillment. Users are strongly advised to check the official website or call ahead before planning an in-person visit. When the physical research room is closed, the Archives continues to serve the public through remote reference services and its extensive online digital repository, ’Digital Maine.’
Collections and Research
The Archives hold a vast array of materials available for public inspection (subject to privacy laws):
- Vital Records: The Archives hold official birth, marriage, and death records from 1892 to 1922. Records prior to 1892 are often found here as well, though they originate from town clerks. (Note: Records from 1923 onwards are held by the DHHS Data, Research, and Vital Statistics office).
- Military Records: Comprehensive files on Maine soldiers from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War are among the most requested collections.
- Judicial Records: Historical court dockets and case files from Maine’s counties are centralized here.
- Legislative History: The original laws, resolve, and committee documents of the Maine Legislature are preserved for legal intent research.
Visiting and Rules
When the research room is open to the public, strict preservation protocols are in place to protect fragile documents.
- Appointments: Due to high demand and limited space during renovation phases, appointments are often required for in-person research.
- Security: Researchers must register upon arrival and present valid photo ID. All bags, coats, and pens must be stored in lockers; only pencils and laptops are typically allowed in the reading room.
- Handling: White cotton gloves may be required for handling photographs or particularly old documents.
The Maine State Archives is dedicated to making these records accessible while ensuring their survival for future generations.
