Overview
Bureau of Information Services (MaineIT)
The Bureau of Information Services (BIS), now consolidated under the Maine Office of Information Technology (MaineIT), serves as the central technology infrastructure provider for the State of Maine’s Executive Branch. 💾 While historically operating as a distinct bureau, its functions, staff, and equipment were merged by Executive Order to form the unified MaineIT organization. The entity continues to be referenced in state vendor contracts and internal procurement channels as the authorized department for IT services.
Core Functions
As the operational backbone of state government technology, this bureau helps manage:
- Enterprise Infrastructure: Hosting and maintaining the state’s data centers, servers, and cloud environments. ☁️
- Telecommunications: Overseeing the statewide phone and data networks (WAN/LAN) that connect government offices. 📞
- Technical Support: Providing help desk services and desktop management for over 11,000 state employees.
- Procurement: Acting as the contracting authority for software licenses, hardware, and IT consulting services (e.g., Avaya, Microsoft).
Location and Access
While the mailing address is 145 State House Station, the physical operations are headquartered at 51 Commerce Drive in Augusta. 🏢 The facility is a secure government building restricted to authorized personnel. Visitors must have an appointment and undergo security screening. The bureau does not offer walk-in services for the general public; its primary ”customers” are other state agencies and departments.
