Maine Board of Pesticides Control
Agency Overview
The Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) is the lead state agency responsible for regulating the distribution and use of pesticides in Maine. Administratively housed within the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, the Board operates from the Deering Building on the AMHI Eastside Campus. Its primary mission is to protect public health and the environment while ensuring that pesticides are applied safely and effectively. The Board is composed of public and expert members appointed by the Governor to oversee policy decisions, while a professional staff handles daily licensing, enforcement, and scientific assessments.
Key Functions and Services
The BPC provides critical regulatory services for both industry professionals and the general public:
- Licensing: Administers exams and issues licenses for commercial applicators, private applicators (farmers), and pesticide dealers.
- Product Registration: Reviews and registers all pesticide products before they can be sold or used within the state.
- Water Quality Monitoring: Conducts testing to detect pesticide residues in Maine’s groundwater and surface waters.
- Compliance and Enforcement: Investigates complaints regarding pesticide misuse, drift, or unlicensed applications.
Visiting the Office
The Board’s offices are located at 90 Blossom Lane in the Deering Building. Visitors are advised that this is a secure state facility; while the lobby is accessible, meetings with specific staff members generally require an appointment and visitor identification. The agency also maintains a robust online portal for license renewals and credit payments, reducing the need for in-person visits.
