Overview
State Advocacy and Support for Maine Veterans
Mission and Role
The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services (MBVS) is the primary state agency dedicated to assisting Maine’s veteran population, their spouses, and dependents. Unlike the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the MBVS acts as an advocate for veterans, helping them navigate the complex systems of state and federal benefits. Headquartered at Camp Keyes, a historic Maine Army National Guard installation in Augusta, the Bureau provides leadership and direction to a network of field offices across the state. Their mission is to ensure that every veteran receives the full range of benefits, services, and recognition they have earned through their service to the nation.
The Bureau works in close partnership with veteran service organizations, federal agencies, and local communities to address issues ranging from homelessness and mental health to employment and education. By offering free, professional assistance, the MBVS helps millions of dollars in federal compensation and pension payments flow into Maine’s economy annually, directly supporting veterans and their families.
Key Services and Benefits
The Augusta office at Camp Keyes serves as both the administrative headquarters and a central field office. Highly trained Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) are available to assist with a wide variety of needs:
- Claims Assistance: VSOs help veterans file claims for federal VA disability compensation and pensions. They guide applicants through the paperwork, help gather necessary medical evidence, and represent veterans during the appeals process.
- State Benefits: The Bureau administers specific state-level benefits, including the Maine Veterans’ Dental Network, free lifetime State Park Passes for eligible veterans, and free or discounted hunting and fishing licenses.
- Records Retrieval: Staff can assist veterans in obtaining lost or destroyed military documents, such as the DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), which is essential for accessing most benefits.
- Cemetery Services: The MBVS oversees the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery System, ensuring dignified burials for veterans and eligible dependents. They handle pre-eligibility determinations and burial scheduling.
Access and Security at Camp Keyes
Because the Bureau is located within Camp Keyes, an active military installation at 194 Winthrop Street, visitors must be prepared for security protocols. Valid photo identification is required for entry at the main gate. Vehicles and bags may be subject to search. Weapons are strictly prohibited on the premises. The facility is accessible to individuals with disabilities, featuring designated parking and ramp access. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to schedule an appointment, ensuring a VSO is available to dedicate sufficient time to their case.
