Overview
Maine Conservation Corps
The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is a state-administered AmeriCorps program headquartered at 54 Independence Drive in Augusta. Operating under the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF), the MCC is dedicated to accomplishing major conservation initiatives, creating employment opportunities, and promoting environmental education. The organization recruits members from across the nation to serve in team-based or individual placements that protect Maine’s natural resources. Since its founding in 1983, the MCC has been a driving force in trail construction, land stewardship, and community volunteerism.
Programs and Opportunities
The MCC offers several streams of service, providing participants with hands-on experience and professional development. The Augusta office serves as the administrative hub where program staff coordinate these statewide efforts. Key programs include:
- Field Teams: Crews of members who live and work together outdoors, building and rehabilitating recreational trails in state parks, land trusts, and on the Appalachian Trail.
- Environmental Stewards: Individual placements with host sites such as non-profits and state agencies, focusing on water quality, habitat restoration, and volunteer management.
- Community Leader Program: Opportunities for experienced members to lead projects and mentor newer recruits.
Participants, known as members, often receive an AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of their service term, which can be used for college tuition or student loans.
Impact and Community Service
The work coordinated from this facility has a tangible impact on Maine’s landscape. MCC crews act as the ”heavy lifting” force for the state’s park system, constructing stone staircases, timber bridges, and sustainable trail treads that allow public access while minimizing environmental damage. The program emphasizes leadership development and civic engagement, training the next generation of conservation professionals. The office also organizes volunteer events for the public to engage with local nature projects.
Location and Contact
The MCC headquarters is located in the Bolton Hill complex, just off Route 3 (North Belfast Avenue). The facility is shared with other DACF bureaus. Visitors should note that while this is the administrative office, the actual conservation work takes place at field sites throughout the state. The office is generally open on weekdays, but calling ahead is recommended as staff frequently travel to field locations. Free parking is available on-site.
