Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
Agency Overview
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is the state agency dedicated to the preservation, protection, and enhancement of the inland fisheries and wildlife resources of Maine. Headquartered at 353 Water Street in Augusta, the department operates as a steward of the state’s vast natural ecosystems. Established in 1880, MDIFW is responsible for managing game species, protecting endangered wildlife, and conserving habitats that are vital to Maine’s ecological health and outdoor heritage. The agency plays a central role in regulating outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping, and boating, ensuring these traditions are maintained safely and sustainably for future generations.
Licensing and Services
The Augusta headquarters houses the main Licensing and Registration division, which serves as a primary hub for outdoor enthusiasts. Here, residents and non-residents can obtain necessary permits for a wide range of activities. The department issues hunting and fishing licenses, registers ATVs, snowmobiles, and watercraft, and manages the lottery systems for moose and antlerless deer permits. Beyond paperwork, the department provides critical safety education courses required for new hunters and recreational vehicle operators. The Information and Education Division also works here to promote public understanding of wildlife conservation through outreach programs and digital resources.
- Licensing: Issuing hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses to residents and visitors.
- Registration: Processing registrations for boats, snowmobiles, and ATVs.
- Safety Education: Coordinating hunter safety, boating safety, and ATV safety courses.
- Wildlife Management: Monitoring animal populations and setting harvest regulations.
- Public Outreach: Providing maps, rulebooks, and educational materials to the public.
Maine Warden Service
The MDIFW is also the home of the Maine Warden Service, a specialized law enforcement branch with a history dating back to the 19th century. Game Wardens are sworn law enforcement officers responsible for enforcing fish and wildlife laws, as well as recreational vehicle statutes. They are often the first responders for search and rescue operations in the state’s remote woodlands and waters. While the Warden Service operates statewide, their command and administrative support are centralized in Augusta, coordinating efforts to combat poaching and ensure public safety in the outdoors.
Location and Visiting
The department’s main office is located in downtown Augusta on Water Street, overlooking the Kennebec River. This facility is open to the public for walk-in services, making it convenient for citizens to handle registration and licensing needs in person. The office environment is equipped to handle inquiries regarding complex regulations and land access. Visitors should be aware that while this is an administrative building, it represents an agency deeply connected to the wild, and staff are knowledgeable about the practical aspects of Maine’s outdoor recreation.
