Maine Department of Marine Resources
Department Overview
The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is the state agency dedicated to the conservation and development of Maine’s marine and estuarine resources. Headquartered in the Marquardt Building on the AMHI Eastside Campus, the DMR plays a critical role in managing the state’s vital commercial fishing industries, including the iconic lobster fishery. The department conducts scientific research, monitors public health regarding shellfish safety, and enforces marine laws through the Maine Marine Patrol. This Augusta location serves as the central administrative hub, housing the Commissioner’s office, the Bureau of Marine Patrol headquarters, and the primary licensing division for commercial harvesters and dealers.
Licensing and Services
The Augusta office is the primary point of contact for industry members requiring administrative services:
- Commercial Licensing: Processing applications and renewals for commercial fishing licenses, including lobster, scallop, and urchin harvesting.
- Aquaculture Leases: Managing the application and review process for aquaculture leases and licenses (LPA).
- Marine Patrol: Serving as the command center for the state’s marine law enforcement agency, which protects resources and ensures safety on coastal waters.
- Public Health: Monitoring water quality and managing shellfish growing area closures to ensure seafood safety.
