Overview
Midcoast Region Operations
The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) – Region 2 Office is located at 45 Commerce Drive in the Central Maine Commerce Center. This facility serves as the headquarters for the Midcoast Region, one of five administrative districts managed by the state’s transportation agency. While the central MaineDOT administration is housed on Child Street, this regional office is responsible for the practical execution of transportation infrastructure maintenance and construction across the mid-coastal counties, including Kennebec, Waldo, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and Knox.
Maintenance and Services
The Region 2 team oversees a vast network of state roads and bridges, ensuring they remain safe and passable year-round. Key functions coordinated from this office include:
- Summer Maintenance: Paving projects, pothole repair, drainage improvements, and vegetation management along state rights-of-way.
- Winter Operations: Coordination of snow and ice removal, salt and sand distribution, and plow truck fleet management for the region.
- Traffic Engineering: Installation and maintenance of traffic signals, signage, and striping to optimize traffic flow and safety.
- Project Management: Oversight of local bridge replacements and highway rehabilitation contracts.
Location and Contact
The office is situated in a multi-agency complex just off Civic Center Drive, sharing the location with the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Labor. Visitors should note that this is an administrative hub for engineering and operations staff rather than a customer service center for driver’s licenses (which is handled by the BMV). The facility manages heavy equipment and fleet services for the area. Public inquiries regarding specific road conditions, construction delays, or driveway permits within the Midcoast region should be directed to this office during standard business hours.
