Overview
Compassionate Care for Maine Communities
Mission and Services
The Maine Public Health Nursing (PHN) Program is a vital division within the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC). Operating from the Augusta District Office at 35 Anthony Avenue, this program utilizes a network of registered nurses to provide critical health services directly to the community. Their mission is to strengthen the public health infrastructure by focusing on disease prevention, health promotion, and the protection of vulnerable populations. PHN services are often the bridge between clinical healthcare and the community, ensuring that no resident is left behind due to barriers like geography or income.
Maternal and Child Health
A cornerstone of the PHN program is its support for families. Public Health Nurses provide home visits for expectant mothers and newborns, offering guidance on breastfeeding, safe sleep environments, and developmental milestones. They work closely with the CradleME referral system to connect families with the appropriate resources. Nurses are also trained to assist with children who have special health needs, helping families navigate the complex healthcare system to secure necessary services.
Infectious Disease Control
Public Health Nurses play a frontline role in controlling the spread of infectious diseases. They manage cases of tuberculosis (TB) through direct observation therapy and contact tracing. The program also organizes and staffs immunization clinics, providing vaccines for influenza, COVID-19, and childhood diseases to schools and community centers. In times of public health emergencies, such as outbreaks or natural disasters, PHN staff are deployed to assist with emergency response and shelter management.
