Overview
Maine State Harness Racing Commission
The Maine State Harness Racing Commission is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing the standardbred horse racing industry in Maine. 🐎 Operating under the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF), the commission ensures the integrity of the sport and the fairness of wagering activities. The administrative office is located in the Deering Building on the state’s East Side Campus (AMHI Complex) at 90 Blossom Lane.
Regulatory Duties
The commission’s primary mission is to protect the betting public and the safety of participants (both human and equine). Key responsibilities include:
- Licensing: Processing applications for owners, trainers, drivers, grooms, and racing officials. 📝
- Enforcement: Investigating violations of racing statutes, conducting hearings, and imposing penalties for infractions. ⚖️
- Drug Testing: Overseeing a rigorous testing program for horses and licensees to prevent the use of prohibited substances. 🧪
- Off-Track Betting (OTB): Licensing and regulating facilities that offer simulcast wagering on races.
- Sire Stakes: Administering the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes program to promote the breeding of racehorses within the state.
Office and Meetings
While the office handles administrative tasks like license processing and race date assignments, the commission also holds regular public meetings to discuss rule changes and hear appeals. 🗓️ Visitors to the Deering Building for these meetings or inquiries should be aware that it is a state government facility with standard business hours. The commission works closely with local tracks, such as First Tracks Cumberland and Bangor Raceway, to coordinate the annual racing calendar.
