Overview
Keeping Maine Moving
The Bureau of Maintenance and Operations (M&O) is the largest division within the Maine Department of Transportation, headquartered at 24 Child Street. This bureau is responsible for the daily upkeep and emergency management of the state’s transportation infrastructure. With a focus on safety and mobility, M&O crews work year-round to ensure that Maine’s 8,300 miles of state highways and associated bridges remain passable and safe for the traveling public.
Core Responsibilities
The bureau manages a vast array of physical assets and operational duties, including:
- Winter Operations: Coordinating the massive snow and ice control efforts during Maine’s harsh winters, including plowing, salting, and sanding state roads.
- Infrastructure Repair: Performing routine maintenance such as pothole filling, crack sealing, drainage improvements, and bridge preservation.
- Traffic Engineering: Maintaining traffic signals, highway signage, and striping to ensure clear guidance for drivers.
- Vegetation Management: Mowing roadsides and controlling brush to maintain sightlines and prevent hazards.
Emergency Response
M&O serves as the department’s first responders for transportation-related emergencies. Whether it’s a washout from a severe storm, a downed tree blocking a route, or an accident requiring traffic control support, maintenance crews are on call to address immediate threats to the roadway network.
