Overview
Executive Leadership for the State of Maine
Role and Function
The Office of the Governor of Maine is the highest executive office in the state government, serving as the headquarters for the Governor and their senior staff, including the Chief of Staff. Located within the historic Maine State House, this office is responsible for overseeing the operation of all executive branch departments, implementing state laws, and setting the strategic policy direction for Maine. The Chief of Staff plays a pivotal role in this ecosystem, managing the daily operations of the Governor’s office, coordinating the Governor’s schedule, and serving as a primary liaison between the Governor and the state legislature, cabinet members, and the public.
The Governor’s Office handles a wide array of critical functions, from drafting the state budget and proposing legislation to responding to statewide emergencies and issuing proclamations. Constituent services are also a major component, where staff assist residents in navigating state bureaucracy and resolving issues with state agencies.
Visiting the State House
The Office is situated in the Maine State House at the corner of State and Capitol Streets. As a working seat of government, the building is open to the public, but visitors must pass through security screening upon entry. This includes metal detectors and bag checks. Guests wishing to meet with specific staff members or the Chief of Staff are strongly encouraged to make an appointment in advance, as the office operates on a tight schedule. The State House itself is a living museum, and visitors can explore the Hall of Flags and observe legislative sessions when the House and Senate are convened.
