Overview
Legislative Leadership
The Office of the Senate President is located within the historic Maine State House at 3 State House Station in Augusta. As the presiding officer of the Maine Senate, the President holds one of the most significant elected positions in state government. In Maine, which does not have a Lieutenant Governor, the Senate President is first in the line of succession to the governorship. The office is responsible for maintaining order during legislative sessions, appointing committee chairs, and facilitating the flow of legislation through the upper chamber of the Maine Legislature.
Functions and Duties
The President’s office serves as the administrative nerve center for the Senate majority leadership. Key responsibilities include:
- Presiding Officer: Chairing daily sessions of the Senate, interpreting rules, and recognizing speakers during debates.
- Committee Appointments: Assigning Senators to various Joint Standing Committees that review bills and budget proposals.
- Constituent Services: Assisting residents of the President’s home district and the state at large with navigating state agencies.
- Legislative Agenda: Setting the calendar for bill readings and voting sessions in coordination with the House Speaker.
Visiting the State House
The office is accessible to the public, though visitors to the State House must pass through a security screening area at the main entrance, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. Weapons are strictly prohibited. The State House itself is a working capitol building, open for self-guided and scheduled tours. Constituents wishing to meet with the Senate President or their staff are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance, as the legislative schedule can be demanding, particularly when the Legislature is in session (typically January through June).
