Overview
Maine Drug Enforcement Agency
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) is the state’s lead agency responsible for combating drug trafficking and addressing the substance abuse crisis within Maine. Headquartered at 45 Commerce Drive in Augusta, the MDEA operates under the Department of Public Safety and serves as the central administrative hub for drug law enforcement. Established by the Maine Drug Enforcement Act of 1987, the agency coordinates the efforts of federal, state, county, and local law enforcement to reduce the supply of illegal drugs and disrupt criminal networks across all sixteen counties.
Investigations and Task Forces
The MDEA functions primarily through a network of District Task Forces staffed by assigned agents from various law enforcement organizations. These units focus on investigating the manufacturing, distribution, and possession of illicit controlled substances, including opioids, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. The Augusta headquarters manages the South Central District Task Force, which covers Kennebec and Somerset counties. The agency also oversees specialized units for diversion of prescription drugs and asset forfeiture.
- Drug Tip Hotline: The agency manages a confidential tip line (1-800-452-6457) and the Tip411 service/app for anonymous reporting.
- Evidence Management: Centralized processing and storage of evidence seized during drug investigations.
- Training and Education: Providing specialized narcotics training to police officers and community awareness programs.
Community and Prevention Support
Beyond enforcement, the MDEA actively supports prevention and treatment initiatives. The agency participates in the national Drug Take Back Days, allowing citizens to safely dispose of expired or unused prescription medications to prevent misuse. They collaborate with public health officials to share data on overdose trends and emerging drug threats, helping to inform state policy and resource allocation for treatment programs.
Location and Contact
The MDEA administrative offices are located in the Central Maine Commerce Center, a professional park off Civic Center Drive (Route 27), easily accessible from I-95 (Exit 112). Visitors to the Department of Public Safety suite should be prepared for security screening and must present a valid government ID. While the agency headquarters handles administrative matters and records, emergency situations should always be directed to 911.
