Portland Water District

Overview

The Portland Water District (PWD) is the public water and wastewater utility serving Portland, Maine, and several surrounding communities in the Greater Portland area. Headquartered on Douglass Street, the PWD is dedicated to providing high-quality drinking water sourced principally from Sebago Lake, one of the purest surface water supplies in the country. The district manages an extensive infrastructure network to ensure public health, environmental protection, and reliable service delivery.

Utility Operations

Water Service: Treatment and distribution of drinking water to over 200,000 people. The district maintains thousands of hydrants and miles of pipeline.
Wastewater Treatment: Operation of the East End Wastewater Treatment Facility and other plants to process sewage and protect Casco Bay’s water quality.
Environmental Education: Offers programs and resources to educate the community about water conservation and watershed protection.

Customer Support

The Douglass Street facility houses the administrative offices and customer service center. Residents can visit or contact the office to establish new service, pay bills, or report emergencies such as water main breaks. The district is governed by an elected Board of Trustees representing the member municipalities, ensuring local accountability and transparency in operations.
