Property and Evidence Unit Overview
The Property and Evidence Unit of the Portland Police Department is responsible for the secure intake, storage, and disposition of all items seized by officers or turned in as found property. Located at the Police Headquarters on Middle Street, this division ensures the chain of custody is maintained for evidence involved in criminal investigations. The unit also manages the return of stolen or lost items to their rightful owners once they are no longer needed for legal proceedings.
Claiming Property
- By Appointment Only: Property is released strictly by appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted. Individuals must call or email to schedule a retrieval time.
- Requirements: A valid government-issued photo ID is required for all property releases. Proof of ownership may also be requested.
- Firearms: The release of firearms requires a background check and specific authorization from the investigating officer.
Unclaimed Items
Property held for safekeeping that remains unclaimed after six months is eligible for disposal. The department utilizes online auction services, such as PropertyRoom.com, to liquidate abandoned or unclaimed goods that are legally cleared for sale.
