Overview
Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building
Supreme Court of Maryland
The Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building is the seat of the highest judiciary bodies in the state: the Supreme Court of Maryland (formerly the Court of Appeals) and the Appellate Court of Maryland (formerly the Court of Special Appeals). Located on Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis, this modern structure serves as the final arbiter for legal disputes in Maryland. The building houses the courtrooms for oral arguments, the clerks’ offices for both appellate courts, and the Thurgood Marshall State Law Library, which is open to the public for legal research. ⚖️🏛️
- Supreme Court of Maryland: The court of last resort, hearing cases primarily by writ of certiorari.
- Appellate Court: The intermediate appellate court that reviews judgments from the Circuit Courts.
- Thurgood Marshall Law Library: Extensive legal collection available to judges, attorneys, and the public.
- Oral Arguments: Public hearings are held here, offering citizens a view of the appellate process.
Security and Access
Access to the building is strictly controlled with airport-style security screening. Visitors must pass through metal detectors, and all bags are X-rayed. Mobile phones and electronic devices are generally permitted but must be silenced and are strictly prohibited from use for recording or photography within the courtrooms. Parking is available in the adjacent lot for a daily fee, or visitors may use the overflow parking at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. 👮♂️📵
