Overview
Department of Public Works Administration
The City of Manchester Department of Public Works (DPW) is the backbone of the city’s infrastructure management. Headquartered on Valley Street, this department is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the city’s physical assets. From the paving of roads to the treatment of wastewater, the DPW ensures that Manchester remains livable, safe, and accessible for all residents and visitors. The 475 Valley Street location serves as the administrative hub and headquarters for the Highway Division, Traffic Department, and Parks & Recreation administration.
Divisions and Responsibilities
- Highway Division: Manages street maintenance, pothole repair, sidewalk construction, and the city’s massive snow removal operations during winter storms.
- Trash & Recycling: Oversees curbside collection schedules, recycling initiatives, and the management of solid waste. Note: The Drop-Off Facility is located separately on Dunbarton Road.
- Wastewater & Stormwater: Manages the city’s sewer infrastructure and ensures environmental compliance with state and federal water quality standards.
- Parks, Recreation & Cemetery: Maintains city parks, public pools, and municipal cemeteries, coordinating seasonal cleanups and facility improvements.
Snow Emergencies and Permits
During the winter months, the DPW is the primary agency responsible for declaring Snow Emergencies and enforcing winter parking bans. Residents must stay informed about parking regulations to avoid towing. The Valley Street office is also the place to inquire about various municipal permits, including driveway permits, excavation permits for contractors, and recycling permits for the drop-off facility.
The department is committed to sustainability and efficiency, constantly upgrading the city’s fleet and facilities. Residents can report non-emergency issues such as missed trash pickup, street light outages, or tree damage directly to this office. The DPW plays a vital role in the daily life of Manchester, operating year-round to maintain the ”Queen City’s” public spaces.
