Overview
Employees’ Retirement System (ERS)
The Employees’ Retirement System of Jersey City (ERS) is the municipal pension fund responsible for administering retirement benefits to eligible city employees. Located at Journal Square, this agency manages the defined benefit pension plan for permanent employees who were hired under the age of forty. The ERS is overseen by a Pension Commission, which ensures the fund’s fiscal health and compliance with state statutes (N.J.S.A. 43:13-22.50 et seq.). The primary mission of the ERS is to provide financial security to public servants after their dedicated years of service to the city.
Membership and Enrollment
Membership in the ERS is generally mandatory for permanent full-time employees of Jersey City. The system tracks service credits, processes member contributions, and calculates retirement allowances based on years of service and final compensation. Employees are encouraged to contact the office to verify their enrollment status, update beneficiaries, or inquire about purchasing service credit for prior public employment.
Retirement Benefits
The ERS processes various types of retirement applications, including Service Retirement, Ordinary Disability, and Accidental Disability. The staff assists members in understanding their vesting rights and the different payout options available upon retirement. The commission holds regular public meetings, typically on the third Wednesday of each month, to review and approve retirement applications and discuss fund investments.
Loans and Withdrawals
Active members may be eligible to apply for loans against their pension contributions, subject to specific interest rates and repayment terms. The office handles all administrative aspects of these transactions, ensuring they meet IRS and state regulations. In cases where an employee leaves city service before retirement, the ERS processes requests for the refund of accumulated deductions.
