Chief Law Enforcement Agency
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office (HCPO) is the chief law enforcement agency for Hudson County, headquartered in the Administration Building on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. Led by the County Prosecutor, a constitutional officer appointed by the Governor, this office is responsible for the detection, investigation, and prosecution of all indictable criminal offenses within the county. The HCPO works in close coordination with the 12 municipal police departments in Hudson County to ensure justice and public safety. ⚖️
Specialized Units and Divisions
- Major Crimes: Includes the Homicide Unit, which investigates suspicious deaths, and the Special Victims Unit (SVU), handling sensitive cases involving domestic violence and sexual assault.
- Narcotics Task Force: Targets organized drug distribution networks and gang-related violence through long-term investigations.
- Internal Affairs: Ensures integrity within the law enforcement community by investigating allegations of misconduct against officers. 🕵️♂️
Victim and Community Services
The HCPO is not just about prosecution; it also houses the Office of Victim/Witness Advocacy, which provides critical support, counseling, and guidance to victims of crime as they navigate the criminal justice system. Additionally, the office manages the county’s Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court, located on the ground floor of the same building, where initial appearances for criminal defendants take place. 🏛️
