NJCU Department of Public Safety
Campus Security and Law Enforcement
The New Jersey City University (NJCU) Department of Public Safety is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for the safety and security of the university’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Headquartered in Rossey Hall at 74 Audubon Avenue, the department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The department employs sworn police officers who possess full police powers and authority throughout the State of New Jersey, as well as non-sworn security officers and dispatchers. Their jurisdiction extends to all property owned, leased, or controlled by the university, ensuring a secure environment for academic and social activities. 🎓👮♂️
Services and Community Programs
Beyond emergency response and crime prevention, the Department of Public Safety offers a variety of administrative and support services to the campus community:
- Gothic Card Services: Management and issuance of the university’s official photo identification card (Gothic Card), which controls access to buildings, parking lots, and meal plans.
- Parking and Transportation: Administration of campus parking permits, enforcement of parking regulations, and coordination of shuttle services for students and staff.
- Escort Service: A safety escort service is available for anyone on campus who feels unsafe walking alone, particularly during evening hours.
- Emergency Notifications: Operation of the university’s emergency alert system to disseminate timely information regarding weather closures or safety threats.
Emergency Protocols and Access
The Public Safety office in Rossey Hall (Room 115) serves as the central command for all campus emergencies. The department maintains a close working relationship with the Jersey City Police Department and Fire Department to coordinate responses to major incidents. Blue light emergency phones are strategically located throughout the campus to provide a direct line to the dispatch center. Visitors to the office for administrative matters, such as obtaining a parking pass or ID, should be prepared to show identification. The department is committed to the Clery Act compliance, publishing an annual security report that details crime statistics and safety policies for the university. 🚨📞
