Overview
Electrical Safety and Permitting
The Newark Electrical Bureau acts as the specialized subcode enforcement arm of the city’s Building Division. Located within the Department of Engineering at City Hall, this bureau is responsible for enforcing the electrical provisions of the Uniform Construction Code (UCC). Its primary mandate is to ensure that all electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial properties throughout Newark meet strict safety standards to prevent fire hazards and ensure system reliability.
Permits and Inspections
- Electrical Permits: Issues permits required for new wiring, service upgrades, panel replacements, and the installation of generators, solar panels, or heavy machinery.
- Plan Review: Examines technical schematics and load calculations for larger construction projects to verify code compliance before work begins.
- Inspections: Conducts rough-wiring and final inspections. Contractors must schedule these inspections to receive a Certificate of Approval (CO) or Certificate of Occupancy.
Contractor and Homeowner Services
The bureau serves as a technical resource for licensed electricians and homeowners. While New Jersey law generally requires a licensed electrician for most work, the bureau advises homeowners on “DIY” limitations and safety requirements. They also investigate reports of hazardous wiring or unpermitted work. The office handles the intake of permit applications (often known as “jackets”) and processes the associated fees.
Visiting the Bureau
The Electrical Bureau is located at 920 Broad Street, typically accessible via the lower level or engineering wing of City Hall (Room B13). Contractors frequently visit during early morning hours to discuss technical issues with inspectors before they leave for field sites. Visitors should be prepared for security screening at the building entrance and should bring all relevant technical documents, including block and lot numbers, for efficient service.
